Before you write
A first email or call is not an engagement, and no attorney-client relationship exists until one is in place in writing. Until then, what you send is not protected the way you would want it to be.
So keep the first message short and general. The name of the other side, the patent numbers if you have them, and roughly what arrived and when is enough to know whether a real conversation makes sense. Please leave confidential material out of it.
